Q. “The security, stability and economic development of Northeast India are closely linked with effective management of the India–Bangladesh border.” Discuss.

Bangladesh occupies a strategically important position for Northeast India because of its geographical proximity and its potential role as a gateway for trade, transit and connectivity. At the same time, cross-border challenges such as illegal migration, smuggling, drug trafficking and extremist infiltration create significant security concerns. The recent concerns highlighted in the newspaper therefore demonstrate that India–Bangladesh relations have a direct bearing on the security and development of the Northeast.

How Bangladesh impacts Northeast India

1. Internal security: The India–Bangladesh border is vulnerable to illegal migration, narcotics trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking and extremist networks. The newspaper specifically reports arrests linked to the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) in Assam and significant narcotics seizures.
